Mundo Agropecuario, (2013). Peru is one of the nations with the highest quality in the production of cocoa and according to figures from the Minagri, last year the production reached 60 thousand tons, which generated about 6.3 million of annual wages, directly benefiting more than 40 thousand families and indirectly 200,000 people.

The economic and social importance of the cocoa chain lies in its contribution to the gross value of production, which during 2012 was 144.761 million nuevos soles. Meanwhile, exports of cocoa and all its preparations (including chocolates) amounted to US $ 116.6 million last year, with a total volume of 41,400 thousand tons, with the main markets being the US, Europe and the Andean Community.

The Minagri promotes a greater consumption of chocolate in Peru that barely reaches 600 grams per capita, while in Europe it reaches 10 kilos.

Likewise, Peru has been qualified by the International Cocoa Organization as a producer and exporter of fine cocoa and aroma, managing to export 36% of the fine cocoa and aroma that is produced worldwide. In addition, as the second producer of organic cocoa, it focuses its production on fair trade markets.
