Scambait Resources
Overview
When scambaiting, we are dealing with criminals - criminals who may fight back with dangerous tactics. To outsmart these people safely, here are some tips and resources.
Warnings
- Do not use personal numbers or accounts
When scambaiting, scammers may report you to the company running the platform. This sometimes results in negative impacts on you, including getting your accounts banned. Worse, you may be targeted by doxxing, swatting, or face physical consequences if the scammer is in your home country. Though such events are rare and generally not a cause for concern, they do happen.
- For phone scams, do not bait spoofed numbers
This affects the owner of the number you're calling, who is not involved with the scam.
- On to the exciting part: baiting!
We recommend that you waste as much of the scammer's time as possible to cause maximal damage. Do not correct errors in the scam however - we want scammers to be inefficient to reduce money lost.
- Investigations and reports
Always report scammers to the relevant authorities when you have the information to do so; although the authorities often ignore reports, there is a chance that a tip may help in arresting some scammers, or shutting down their accounts to slow them down.
Tips
- Second phone number
Textnow, Talkatone, Secondline or other VoIP services can give you a second number; use area codes 226, 515 or 612 if you want to sign up for Whatsapp or Telegram. Google Voice is another option if you are in the US.

We haven't found ways to reliably get contacts on other platforms, so keep a list of scammers in case your baiting account(s) get banned, and text scammers first to get your account shared (to other scammers).
- DoS attacks
Denial of service (DoS) attacks make scammers' accounts unusable, such that ongoing scams on those accounts grind to a halt.
Getting scammers
Instagram/Facebook
make bait accounts that look like an ideal scam victim (example: impersonate an old person for romance scams (and loads more), college student for sugar mommas, etc)
follow certain celebrities and verified accounts (example: follow fortnite and you’ll most likely get free vbucks accounts that follow you immediately hoping you dm them)
use certain hashtags and tag certain people in posts (haven’t used this method myself so I don’t have an example)
go to certain popular old/middle aged people accounts (real or fake) and follow as many people from their follower list as you want scammers in your dms (example: @tonyblythe1 on Instagram has all scammer followers)
Twitter
tweet something with key words that scammers target (example: tweet something about sugar Mommas or essays and you’ll get scammers commenting)
Snapchat
use Snapchat friend apps like Hoop or Wink and add all of the obvious scammers
once you’ve added a lot of scammers, they will start popping up in your quick add and they will add you without you even having to find them
Whatsapp
join scam WhatsApp groups found on Facebook scam groups or online databases (example: https://groupda.com, https://groupsor.com)
Words with Friends
accept games from anyone who starts one with you and scammers will come
