Design thinking was applied to the design and development of this course. The principles of Design thinking were adapted from work by Hartson and Pyla (2002) The UX Book: Process and Guidelines for Designing a Quality User Experience and Wiggins and Mctighe (2005).
For gathering inspiration I watched several videos about backwards design. I found this series of videos, by Grant Wiggins, to be especially helpful. He demonstrates Understanding By Design here for a small audience of teachers.
For generating ideas I referred back to the process for user experience design presented by Hartson and Pyla (2012) in their book “The UX Book: Process and guidelines for ensuring a quality user experience.” The iterative process that they propose for designing new things is: analyze, design, prototype, evaluate. This design process can be combined with the steps of backwards design by Wiggins and Mctighe (2005):
While the Wiggins and McTighe (2005) process provide a goal focused framework, the Hartson and Pyla (2012) design process helps to keep the framework user centered and iterative.
To make these ideas Tangible, I created an outline/mockup of the classroom. I will also create some storyboards/scenarios of how the technology (Slack) will help to increase the likelihood of a community of practice which they may also facilitate a community of inquiry.
For this phase I shared my storyboards, mockups and ideas with colleagues and potential students to receive feedback.
