ABOUT APSA
The mission of Stony Brook’s American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) Undergraduate Local Chapter is to promote awareness of the physician-scientist pathway through community outreach by providing professional development opportunities and implementing longitudinal mentorship partnering with the SBU MD/PhD Program (MSTP).
We strive to inspire all members of our chapter to realize their educational and professional goals through an undergraduate-led initiative tailored to supporting and guiding students in exploring this dual-career pathway from the earliest stages of their academic journey. SBU APSA Undergraduate Local Chapter will empower our members to develop the skills and connections essential for future physician-scientists, committing to advancing scientific discovery and improving patient care.
WHAT IS AN MD/PhD?
An MD-PhD is a dual-degree program where a student undergoes both medical school training and graduate school formal scientist training, achieving both their Doctorate of Medicine (M.D) and Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D). These graduates are called Physician-Scientists.
Physician-scientists stand at the intersection of scientific research and clinical medicine. These are trailblazers in translational research, drug development, biomedical education, and much more. With an MD-PhD, you can work as a physician-scientist, in academia, industry, government agencies, and many other fields of science and medicine.
If you're interested in this pathway, check out our GBMS, where we discuss all things MD-PhD through informational GBMS, professional development, and other resources for prospective physician-scientists!
Nationwide, there are over 100 MD-PhD programs!
OTHER PHYSICIAN-SCIENTIST TRACKS
You don't need an MD/PhD to be a physician-scientist! MD/DO degrees and/or PhD/MS degrees can still do research in a clinical setting. Physician-scientist broadly is any profession that combines both research and medicine.
