The Athlete Experience During COVID-19
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Atlantic-10 Conference cancelled all Spring sports and suspended all Fall sports in 2020. This included all men's and women's sports at St. Bonaventure. "Last March I heard “oh we’ll have a cross country season in the fall” and that got canceled, I heard “oh we’ll have an indoor season” and that was canceled as well. It is difficult to keep hope when hope keeps getting crushed."
Once practiced resumed, many teams across campus experienced COVID-19 outbreaks within their team and staff. An athlete describes her experience in quarantine as such...
"Although the staff is working very hard, the situation was awful. The food was disgusting (almost inedible), the sink and shower barely worked, and I did not get dinner on Thanksgiving."
The Class of 2020's Experience During COVID-19
The St. Bonaventure University Class of 2020 was affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic the second half of their senior year. As a result of being sent home, they were unable to enjoy their last days at St. Bonaventure. One Class of 2020 student describes the emotional reality of not being able to return to campus. They stated...
"I've found myself anxious and emotional since the news we would not be returning to Bonas before the 2020 school year was over. It felt as if we were being thrown into adulthood five months early."
Many students in the Class of 2020 regretted not doing more while at St. Bonaventure. One Class of 2020 senior emphasized the importance of not taking anything for granted by saying...
"Future Bonnies, please do not wait to do something you have always wanted to do because you have tomorrow, or next week, or even next semester/year. I thought I did too, until I got the email that I didn't have tomorrow to do something with my friends that I had always wanted to do."
