Vredenburg was established in 1875 as a Dutch Reformed Church congregation to serve nearby communities. Originally called Twisfontein due to a dispute over a freshwater spring, it was later renamed Vredenburg, meaning "town of peace."
The settlement is located about 12 km inland from Saldanha Bay and 138 km north of Cape Town, and is identified as the largest town in the Saldanha Bay Municipal Area the location in the context of the larger municipal area resulted in the settlement developing as a regional hub for commerce, administration, and healthcare. Key facilities include the West Coast Mall and Vredenburg Hospital.
Functionally, Vredenburg is identified as a Regional Development Anchor and a primary service centre, with significant growth potential. Key challenges include infrastructure strain, waste management issues, and socio-economic disparities. Its location, facilities, and emerging industrial role present significant development opportunities.Â
