Saldanha is a historic coastal town named after Portuguese admiral António de Saldanha, with roots dating back over 500 years. Development accelerated during World War II with the establishment of the SAS Saldanha naval base.
Located along Saldanha Bay’s north-western shore, the town is part of a functional urban region with Vredenburg and Langebaan, and plays a key role in the regional economy through fishing, tourism, port, military, and steel industries.
Designated as a regional service centre and a growth zone in national plans, Saldanha has a fragmented layout due to natural and historical factors. Key residential areas include Bluewater Bay, White City, Diazville, and the Middelpos informal settlement.
