Paternoster is the oldest fishing village on South Africa’s West Coast, established in 1863. Originally a fishing hub, it has become a popular tourist destination known for its whitewashed cottages, beaches, and natural beauty. Located 15 km from Vredenburg, it now relies mainly on tourism, though fishing still plays a role. The village has a mix of historic and newer developments, with a growing divide between high- and low-income areas. Despite modern growth, it retains much of its coastal charm and cultural heritage.
