The Sonification of an AVL Tree
2023 - Fall 2023 Creative Music Lab Ensemble
2023 - Fall 2023 Creative Music Lab Ensemble
Program Note: Inspired by performance works in the vein of Pauline Oliveros, this piece is designed to be a lightweight, portable performance piece that is ensemble agnostic. To perform this piece, each player in an ensemble is given a number in a set of numbers whose size is equal to the amount of ensemble members. This set of numbers is then sorted into an AVL tree, a step-by-step visual representation of which is displayed with a Google Slides presentation. The players are given a basic set of instructions which they perform according to the AVL tree’s various steps. The result is an emergent soundscape in accordance with this improvisation framework.
The Sonification of an AVL Tree debuted at the December 5 2023 Creative Music Lab Concert where it was performed by Awen McKee, Bella Cauley, Daniel Knapp, Donovan Musicant, Hanna Stone, Maya Sagarin, Oliver Harlan, Ori Josell, and myself. Short of Sam Thiel, who was unable to attend the concert due to sickness, this piece was performed by the entire Fall 2023 Creative Music Lab Ensemble, which was led by Professor Dana Jessen. To see the debut performance of this piece, I have included link to an unlisted YouTube video.
Please Note: I have included this video only for the purposes of documentation and technical evaluation, please do not distribute it more than is necessary.
The score for this piece, which includes performance instructions and one specific sequence of ten numbers to get sorted, is embedded below. Should you wish to perform this piece, please download, copy, and modify this PowerPoint to whatever degree you see fit and contact me as I'd love to see what you do with it!
