To support student success, USM uses student scores on the Math Placement Test to determine enrollment in mathematics courses or math-related courses. Many majors at USM have specific math requirements, so completing the Math Placement Test helps place you into the most appropriate course.

All incoming degree students are required to take the Math Placement Test if they have not submitted a SATM or ACT test score. Students who submit a SATM score of 570 or above or ACT Math score of 22 or above are required to take the Math Placement Test if they are interested in enrolling in a Pre-Calculus (MAT 140) or Calculus (MAT 152) course as their first math course at USM.

USM is using the ALEKS PPL, a web-based test designed to identify your strengths and weakness in mathematics. The Placement Assessment has up to 30 questions and generally takes 60-90 minutes to complete (the maximum time allowed is 3 hours). The expectation is that you start and finish the test in one sitting.

If you are taking the test for the first time: Be sure your USM email account is activated, and then review the log-in procedures below, before clicking on the ALEKS Math Placement Test link.

Your overall test score is a number between 0 and 100. This score represents the percentage of topics ALEKS has identified that you have mastered. Please see the following test score rubric to interpret the math test score.

Other Course Placement Options: Depending upon your major, the following math-related courses could be an option for those with an adequate math test score. Please discuss with your academic advisor.

SAT or ACT scores: If you are being prompted to take this test on your Enrollment Checklist (or if you need to meet a math prerequisite for a class like Chemistry), we may not have verified test scores for you. Students have the option to download their official score report for ACT and/or SAT. These downloadable score reports may be emailed to processing@appstate.edu to be added to your application.

AP/IB Credit: You DO NOT need to take the test if Appalachian has awarded you AP math or statistics credit (check DegreeWorks to be sure). If you are hoping for AP or IB credit for a recent math or statistics exam, go ahead and take the Math Placement Test so that you can register for most math and statistics courses now and adjust your schedule later - if needed - once your score(s) has been received. How to send your AP or IB score report to Appalachian.

Transfer Credit: You DO NOT need to take the test if Appalachian has awarded you 3 or more hours of college-level transfer math or statistics credit (check DegreeWorks to be sure). Pending credit is also acceptable, but the transfer course must be added to your record as a Course in Progress.

To take the Math Placement test, you will need to use your App State username and password to log in to AsULearn Projects, App State's virtual classroom space. Select "Enroll Me" to self-enroll in the course. You are allowed to take this test only once.

Once you have completed the placement test, please allow several hours for your score to process in our student information system. You will NOT be able to register for a math class until your score processes.

In order to correctly place students in mathematics courses at Indiana State University, students are required to take a mathematics placement test. The test can be taken on-line in less than an hour.

If you are an incoming ISU student, the test must be completed before attending orientation. This is a requirement for all students that are new to ISU. The only exception may be for recent high school graduates who scored a B or better in both semesters of high school Algebra II. There is no charge to take the Math Placement Test.

You will have the opportunity to take this placement test more than once at no cost. It is designed to assess what you know. At the end of the initial assessment, you will have a much better sense of your strengths and weaknesses in math. You will then have a chance to work on those weaknesses then retest. The most important thing is that you take the test seriously and give it an honest effort so that the assessment truly reflects your level of knowledge and math preparedness.

Background:  Basic numeracy skills are necessary before patients can understand the risks of medical treatments. Previous research has used objective measures, similar to mathematics tests, to evaluate numeracy.

Results:  An 8-item measure, the Subjective Numeracy Scale (SNS), was developed through several rounds of testing. Four items measure people's beliefs about their skill in performing various mathematical operations, and 4 measure people's preferences regarding the presentation of numerical information. The SNS was significantly correlated with Lipkus and others' objective numeracy scale (correlations: 0.63-0.68) yet was completed in less time (24 s/item v. 31 s/item, P < 0.05) and was perceived as less stressful (1.62 v. 2.69, P < 0.01) and less frustrating (1.92 v. 2.88, P < 0.01). Fifty percent of participants who completed the SNS volunteered to participate in another study, whereas only 8% of those who completed the Lipkus and others scale similarly volunteered (odds ratio = 11.00, 95% confidence interval = 2.14-56.65).

Conclusions:  The SNS correlates well with mathematical test measures of objective numeracy but can be administered in less time and with less burden. In addition, it is much more likely to leave participants willing to participate in additional research and shows much lower rates of missing or incomplete data.

Your math course choice will depend on your math background and educational plan. You are strongly encouraged to meet with a mathematics faculty member or a counselor before enrolling. Do not choose your math course based on your score alone.

MAT 119 is finite mathematics and includes linear algebra, linear programming, combinatorics, probability and mathematics of finance. It is used in specific programs as their last math course needed for the program.

ASU encourages each student to spend time in the ALEKS prep and learning module even if the desired score is achieved, because it will lead to better preparation and improved performance in math courses.

The length and the content of the math placement assessment will vary, but can be up to 30 questions. You will see some, but not all, of the math you have learned in high school. It is a placement assessment, not a preview of math courses at ASU. It is designed to identify if you are prepared for a particular course. After you take your first placement assessment, you will have the opportunity to review and master additional topics to reassess and improve your placement.

No. The ALEKS system provides you the tools necessary to complete the assessment. The idea of the assessment is simply to show where you place, and we want to make sure you are placed into the appropriate math course based on your current knowledge. Blank scratch paper and a pencil or pen can be used to work out problems. Please show both sides of the paper to the camera during the environment check.

No. Three attempts are all that is allotted for you during your time as an ASU student. You are advised to begin your math sequence of classes as soon as possible after completing the math placement assessment. Should you change your major, your old score is still valid for one year after completion of the placement assessment. We encourage you to use your three attempts wisely

You will not be able to access your third attempt until you log three or more hours of prep and learning module work between the second and third attempts. Learning modules are designed to help you review material you may have forgotten since your last math course.

It is crucial that the scores be reflective of your current mathematical knowledge. Therefore, the scores are only valid for one year. If your scores have expired, you will need to take the math placement assessment again with your remaining attempts.

You will need to take the assessment using one of these system setups. If you do not have access to one of these systems, check with family, friends or local libraries to see if their computers are equipped with the requirements needed to take the math placement assessment.

If your account is inactive, it means it has expired. Your account is active for one year after creating it; however, it can be extended. Please email placement.math@asu.edu with your extension request.

ALEKS PPL is more than just a test of your current mathematical skillset. Based on your initial assessment, it builds you a personalized study plan to help you improve your score by reviewing concepts you may not have used in a while. You may retake the assessment up to four more times. Most students increase their scores by five-to-ten points on their second attempt. This review will also help you to succeed in the MATH or STAT class you place into. e24fc04721
