In this unit, we learn about the Bible, what we can learn from it, and how it is proclaimed at the Holy Mass.

32. What Is the Bible?

The Bible—Sacred Scripture—is the Word of God put down in human writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

LESSON VOCABULARY

Bible:
Sacred Scripture. The written record of God’s revelation of Himself. It is the speech of God put down in writing under the breath of the Holy Spirit. The Word of God.

Salvation History:
The story of God’s love and mercy revealed to us throughout human history. The most important moment of Salvation History is Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross and Resurrection from the dead which won for us salvation from sin and death.

33. In the Bible We Learn about God and His Plan of Salvation

Scripture and Tradition communicates to us God’s revelation of Himself.

Vocabulary

Lectio Divina:
Lectio Divina is an ancient form of praying with Scripture that is a slow and thoughtful encounter with the Word of God. It is Latin for “divine reading.”

Sacred Tradition:
The mode of transmission of the Word of God given to the Apostles by Jesus and the Holy Spirit. The Apostles in turn handed it on to their successors, the bishops.

Evangelist:
Someone who tells others about Jesus and the Good News that He came down from Heaven and died on the Cross to take away our sins. There are four Evangelists who wrote the four Gospels in the New Testament to share the Good News of salvation. They are St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke, and St. John.
