Description of  Position:  Dr. Sarah F. Small is seeking a bilingual (Spanish/English) research assistant (RA) for transcription assistance for a study on the history of feminist macroeconomics. The RA will review oral history recordings and their transcriptions to ensure the AI generated transcriptions are correct. Final recordings and transcriptions will be archived in the Sorbonne (Paris) with the Oral Histories of Economics Project. Student will get exposure to oral history research processes, international partnerships, and research in the history of economic thought. 

Responsibilities:

• Listen to audio recordings of oral history interviews while reading their transcriptions. Interviews are in English and Spanish.

• Correct any issues with the transcriptions.

• Format and prepare transcriptions for the interviewees to review before they are archived.

• Review research paper and meet with Professor Small (and coauthor Lorena Valle Cuéllar) to highlight any items that student may find are missing or should be corrected or expanded upon.

Qualifications:

• Fluent in English and Spanish (ideal, but not required)

• Close attention to detail  

• Self-starter and willing to take ownership of tasks from start to finish

• Collaborative and willing to work as part of a team

• Creative and eager to tease out new findings from the oral histories

Students of any major or year are welcome to apply. Students with an interest in economics, history, or gender studies may be especially excited about this particular project. 

Hours: 25 hours total for the semester

Wage: $16/hour

Funding source: Dr. Small's development account

Employment length: one semester, with opportunity to continue in other research assistantships in future semesters given available funds/projects and mutual interest.

Description of Position: Dr. Sarah F. Small is seeking a research assistant (RA) for a study on the economic thought of Phyllis Wallace. Using archival data from MIT and Wallace's publications, we will begin by undertaking an intellectual biography of Phyllis Wallace, with a focus on her contributions to the economics of labor market discrimination and her novel approach to intersectional research in economics. RA will learn about and undertake archival research methods.

Responsibilities: 

• Read and analyze Wallace's publications on labor market discrimination

• Conduct archival research in Wallace's papers at MIT, including close note-taking and careful documentation of sources 

• Think and write carefully about the development of economic theories on labor market discrimination

• Assist in development of at least one peer reviewed research article

• Meet with Dr. Small weekly or biweekly to discuss progress and plans

Qualifications:

• Close attention to detail  

• Self-starter and willing to take ownership of tasks from start to finish

• Creative and eager to tease out new findings from archival data

• Critical reader with a good eye for interesting stories

• Strong understanding of economic theory, particularly in labor economics

• Willingness to learn and respond to feedback

• Strong writer and synthesizer of qualitative data

• Collaborative and willing to work as part of a team

Students of any major or year are welcome to apply. Students with an interest in economics, history, or gender studies may be especially excited about this particular project.  Likely best for a student considering graduate school  (e.g. masters or PhD in economics, history, gender studies). 

Student to travel to MIT archives in Boston for analysis of Wallace's collection. Travel expenses (train, hotel) will be paid. Student may also present research at the History of Economics Society conference in Boston, Summer 2027, if project progress is sufficient. 

Hours: 100 hours total for the semester (around 6-8 hours per week on average), opportunity to expand to Spring semester.
