गुणी गुणं वेत्ति न वेत्ति निर्गुणो

बली बलं वेत्ति न वेत्ति दुर्बलः।

पिको वसन्तस्य गुणं न वायसः

करी च सिंहस्य बलं न मूषकः॥४०॥

अन्वयः-

गुणी गुणम् वेत्ति निर्गुणः न वेत्ति बली बलम् वेत्ति दुर्बलः न वेत्ति पिकः वसन्तस्य गुणम् वायसः न च करी सिंहस्य बलम् मूषकः न।

A virtuous person (alone] appreciates the virtue [of others and), the virtueless does not. The powerful appreciates the strength, the weak does not appreciate. The cuckoo [knows] the quality of the spring season, not the crow and the elephant [knows] the strength of the lion, [and] not the mouse (knows).
