Urban Heat Islands and Healthy Cities

This project aims at detecting urban heat islands and establishing their relationship with the diversity of mosquito carriers of infectious diseases.

 The project is financed by the National Geographic Society (NGS-67544R-20) grant awarded to the project PI: Dr. Elizabet Estallo. The team includes researchers from the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, and GECo Lab at Clark University

Project results will provide necessary information to Córdoba city urban planners to work on solutions to counteract the rising problems of urbanization and climate change. Also, this could lead to exploring new urban policies regarding green areas, allowing the health government sector to generate solutions for a healthier and more sustainable city. 

GECo Lab supports this project by integrating remote sensing measurements of land surface temperature using MODIS LST,  as well as mapping built-up density with Sentinel 2 data. 


UHI in Cordoba City, Argentina

Land use and land cover changes replace natural land cover with dense concentration of pavement, buildings, and impervious surfaces.

These changes diminish water absorption capacity and cause an Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect through the increased heat accumulation and emissions.

UHI and mosquito diversity

UHIs can exacerbate the impact of mosquitoes on human health, as they create more favorable conditions for mosquito survival and reproduction. Proper management of urban landscapes, such as reducing the amount of impervious surfaces, increasing vegetation cover, and limiting the creation of artificial water sources, can help reduce the impact of UHIs on mosquito populations and mitigate the risk of mosquito-borne diseases
