Laundromat
We walk in and see
that your eyes are small stones
and your body lays like lost wood.
We see dug-in dirt: A strange skin.
We whiff pongs of stale beer hovering.
We load our crumpled clothes:
Shirts, socks, pants, niffy
underwear. We leave and come back,
leave food on the floor: Curried beans,
fried rice, firmly pressed tofu.
We see you edging, a shy sun,
out past the door. We see you sharing
the food with friends: Queen of cracked steps.
We look around. We look up.
On the bulletin board, a sign:
Keep this laundromat clean.
Free from undesirables.

Journal Notes (Winter semester, 2014)
I wrote down that sad
got wild, bold and energetic.
That betrayed looks took on circular shapes.
I spoke about Bedouin speeches,
Palestinian stones, decried Israeli occupation.
I noted that I overate and prayed,
walked and forgave.
That I moved around and charged through
numbers, chairs, and doors.
That I studied and walked, slept, evaluated.
Obsessed about voice, contemplated social class, closed in on intensity.
I observed that I desired
the poetic project that rambled,
latest theories of sociology.
I looked to ahead to fellowships,
a low-income future, looked for
moons in the sky that shone near the sun.
I wrote it down that I was part of a small place,
an out crowd. That it was a Ph.D. workout
come home.

POET, POÈTE
I have written poetry since I was ten years old and have continued to write, publish and perform throughout my adult life. It is a great means of expressing creativity and a soulful adventure.
My poetry has been published in a wide variety of literary forums and I am the author of three poetry chapbooks: Un/Daunted in the Black and Gold (sitting duck press, 2014), Life Times Two (Cactus Press, 2021) and Plenty of the Sky and Ground (Dancing Girl Press, 2023).
