Sanctuary City blends together time and memory in such a way that traditional staging proves impossible. The linear structure we as American audiences have grown accustomed to is still present at times, but sections of the show will prove to be unlike anything you have seen before at Indiana University. The show exemplifies that form must follow the content of any story. While a traditional approach could have been used, it would have failed to capture the sense of impermanence that so many undocumented immigrants and DACA recipients feel daily. While they have built lives for themselves here, these lives can quickly be taken away as policies and laws change. This show is not inherently political. The people that this story portray have lives that have been politicized. On the reverse of this insert, you may scan a variety of QR codes containing information about undocumented people in Indiana and ways you can become more involved and educated on issues on immigration reform.
We would also like to invite you to go on stage and help us create the world that this play will be presented in. Stamp a piece of paper and place it on any of the floor that is painted black surrounding the playing space. Also, take some time to read the phrases painted on the floor. Many of these phrases came from politicians who are currently running for reelection in Indiana or dialogue from the show.
