Martyna Majok was born in Poland but immigrated with her mother to Kearny, New Jersey when she was a child. Growing up she attended public school and experienced the hardships of immigrating to America with little financial support. This childhood has influenced much of her writing. She started writing plays at a young age winning an award in high school for her first attempt at writing a drama. She then attended University of Chicago on scholarship where she got a BA in theatre. She continued her studies at Yale and Julliard where she focused on playwriting. Her work has been awarded many times with her play Iron Bound ending up on the Kilroy's List and Her play Cost of Living winning the 2018 Pulitzer prize. Her most current work is on the musical Gatsby collaborating with Florence Welch.
Rebecca Frecknall directed the first production of Sanctuary City. Originally from Cambridgeshire she attended Goldsmiths at the Univeristy of London before taking courses at the London Academy of Music and the Dramatic Arts. Her direction of Tennesee Williams Summer and Smoke brought her much critical acclaim especially as she was able to breathe new life into a forgotten work. Eddie Redmayne saw this production and asked her to direct an upcoming version of Cabaret he was attached to. This production went on to win Olivier awards and and a Tony.
