Music in Context
In every subject including music, the context is just as important of the material. As music educators we need to introduce new ideas and methods into my teaching. You cannot perform, read, make or understand any concept if you do not understand how the culture affects and fuctions as a central concept in music. My classroom will untake the process of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This is my take on context and what my students and I will strive for in our classroom about the context of our music.
Our students need to be included in the cirriculm without a question. Finding resources and projects that actively include who they are can help inspire them and feel important. Us teachers need to dismantle the myth of what "education should look like" and instead focus on teaching students relevant information. These videos are what I am thinking to become more Culturaly Responsive.
Cultural Responsive Pedagody
Reality: You need to understand your student's needs today, as they change in each class and year. Teachers need to adopt to what they have as students to see where the holes are and how they can fill them in their students life's better.
Care: Need students to feel that you care about them and who they are. Don't feel supportive don't care about what you have to tell them. Show them you care.
Culturally Responsive Teaching: There is an abundance of different cultures in urban style schools, and you can totally use your student's identity for music education. You need to make your student's know their culture's are important.
This video brings up many important ideas to think about in the classroom. You need to let your students know they can achieve anything. But a problem arises when they don't see themselves reflected in any of those activities. Mirrors lets students feel seen and heard. While windows also educates other students to deeper understand their peers and understand cultures and values other than their own.
NOTE:
Even just from these videos I am learning EVERYDAY that how we appropach teaching of the non-dominant culture we need to acknowlege the history of that culture and discuss with our students the challenges that they faced. There is no vacuum, music does not exist outside of the social context when it was created. This is still an ongoing learning experience for everyone and how we continue to interact with music of non-dominant cultures will change as new views and opinions are brough to light.
