Choosing Technology for the Music Classroom
As technology progresses, music education should reflect that in the cirriculum! The "accepted practice" that electronic music or technology in music isn't real music is totally false. Not all music is made with traditional intruments, and us teachers need to push the boundaries to be more inclusive of "what is music" and how can I include that in my teaching? Some students are more adapt to learn with technology, and adding it in may help to keep students who would otherwise choose to leave music. Technology in music can be used to teach form, rhythm, instrumentation, texture, harmony and even more! This is also extreamly important for the current situation of our world, when we may not be able to use traditional practices and instructions in our classroom. Students are always around technolgy, when we disengage with the students' world, it makes it harder for them to understand why they need music or why should they do it. Technology in music meets where kids are in their everyday life and to include music into their world.
Teachers need to take a step back and asking ourselves, Should we do this because it is relevant for our students or because it has always been this way? We need to accept that much of the education system had good intentions, but we need to teach to the issues and challenges our society has today.
Keep your Music program at school and stop having kids drop out: Think about what is important for students TODAY and how can your music program adapt to the questions we are asking NOW.
New Ways of Music Education
Rethinking Classical Music: Unrepresented composer i.e. women, BIPOC have often been excluded from the general knowledge. I plan on including their work to student minds'
Definition of Musician: We always include people who perform as the only part of music, but what about kids in your class that can produce or explore different parts of music?
Including more Skills: We often forget how much work it takes to set up for a concert, show etc. Each of your students have strenths and you can use that to your advantage. Let them know they can use their "non-music" skills in your classroom
Perfectionism: Education needs to move away from you are right and wrong, especially music with perfectionism. We can explore topics to learn, not to be perfect. If we try our best at the level we are at that is all we can ask for.
This is what I strive in class to become for my students and community. No one lives a vacuum and everyone's different experiences can have value and meaning especially in the classroom. I want students to be able to learn from one another to create a more productice helpful world.
