Prototype Design for Teacher App in Personalized Learning Platform
This is a report of a class project and it outlines the design of a prototype for the teacher app, a critical component of a new personalized learning platform. The app is intended to support teachers in managing daily learner interactions, tracking progress, organizing collaborative activities, and providing timely interventions. The design prioritizes usability, efficiency, and alignment with the broader system's goals to set the platform apart from competitors. All aspects of this project was done entirely by me. I conducted usability test and updated the prototype baesed on the test.
Primary Goal: Provide teachers with a mobile-friendly tool to track learner progress, record daily interactions, organize collaborative learning, override screen-time limits, and stay informed about platform best practices.
The teacher app is designed to:
1. Streamline teacher-learner interactions by providing quick access to key learner data.
2. Enhance collaboration through tools that group learners and facilitate peer tutoring.
3. Support personalized interventions by allowing teachers to override time limits and track follow-up actions.
4. Minimize cognitive load with an intuitive interface and task flows requiring minimal clicks.
5. Encourage best practices through daily tips on personalized learning.
The app includes the following features, designed for ease of use during classroom interactions:
Feature Details: Displays each learner’s current status.
Includes:
Title and learning objectives of the current learning object.
Time spent in the platform (daily, weekly, monthly).
Lists of completed and pending assignments.
Design Approach:
A dashboard-style interface with collapsible sections for quick navigation.
Color-coded indicators for assignment status (e.g., green for completed, red for overdue).
Feature Details: A short form for teachers to log interactions, including:
Learner status at the start (e.g., Engaged, Stuck, Distracted).
Teacher actions (e.g., Answered questions, Redirected process).
Follow-up actions (e.g., Check back today, Call parents).
Comments section for additional notes.
Design Approach:
Pre-filled dropdown menus and checkboxes for quick selection.
A text box for optional comments.
Auto-save functionality to prevent data loss.
Feature Details: A consolidated list of follow-up actions across all learners in the class.
Design Approach:
· Accessible via a single tap from the home screen.
· Filter options by action type or learner.
Feature Details: Group learners working on similar objectives.
· Match learners with peer tutors.
· Set meeting times and communicate them to groups.
Design Approach:
· Drag-and-drop/check box interface for grouping learners.
· Integrated messaging system for scheduling notifications.
Feature Details: Allows teachers to extend platform usage time for individual learners when necessary.
Design Approach:
· Accessible directly from the learner’s profile screen with a single tap.
Feature Details: Provides brief insights on best practices in personalized learning and platform features.
Design Approach:
· Pop-up notifications or a dedicated section on the home screen.
· Dismissible tips to avoid distractions.
The prototype adheres to the following principles:
1. Simplicity: Only essential features are included; unnecessary elements are omitted to reduce clutter.
2. Efficiency: Tasks can be completed in as few clicks as possible (e.g., logging an interaction takes no more than three taps).
3. Consistency: Uniform design patterns across screens ensure familiarity and ease of use.
4. Responsiveness: Optimized for smartphone screens with touch-friendly elements.
The prototype design in Figma follows this structure:
The home screen displays quick links to learner profiles, follow-up actions, collaboration tools, and daily tips.
Learner profile screen Includes:
· Current learning object details.
· Time spent on the platform (daily/weekly/monthly).
· Assignment lists (completed/pending).
Interaction logging screen
Features:
· Dropdowns and checkboxes for quick input of learner status, teacher actions, and follow-ups.
· A text box for optional comments.
The follow-up actions screen displays a summary list of all necessary follow-ups for learners.
Collaboration tools screen
Includes:
· Drag-and-drop interface for creating groups or assigning peer tutors.
· Scheduling tool with notification options.
Settings/overrides screen allows time limit overrides for individual learners.
The daily tips screen displays a rotating list of best practices or feature highlights.
Shades of blue, red, green, and neutral colors.
