The Bintulu Science Teaching College was replaced with this college, and construction on it started in 1998. The college, which is situated on Jalan Dato Mohd Musa in Kota Samarahan, began operations on June 1 of 1999, and YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Hj. Abdul Taib Mahmud, the Chief Minister of Sarawak, officially opened it on November 22, 1999. The Sarawak State Government has provided the Ministry of Education a 64-acre (0.259 km2) tract of land in Kota Samarahan, Jalan Dato' Mohd Musa, some 20 km from Kuching's city centre, for the creation of the Islamic Teachers College. However, the initial proposal for the current site was amended to the Samarahan instructors College to replace the Bintulu Science Teachers College because the intake of religious instructors is not high.
