We wanted a way to travel, see the country and camp anywhere, including "dispersed" or "wild" camping in the middle of nowhere, in the mountains and remote desert, fully self-supported for days. We like to camp which means cooking and living outside when we are camping so we wanted minimal kitchen and counter space but rather an open interior space with flexibility to sleep up to 3 grandkids. And we did not want a trailer or boxy, top-heavy camper or van with inadequate clearance that could not easily and safely navigate rough roads.
After visiting several camper makers, we concluded that a Four Wheel Campers was the best choice for us, with their strong, lightweight aluminum frame and low profile on the road. We chose the Hawk shell because it seemed to match up with the payload capacity of an aluminum- bodied Ford F-150 , yet still have reasonable interior space and height. Most importantly, perhaps, we chose the shell version of the Hawk model so that we could, with some simple construction, make an open and flexible interior that exactly met our needs. You will see in Our Build Plan how open and flexible it is!
