This page is about a few of our favorite spots to visit and to camp. It is also about our methods for finding free or cheap camping in wonderful places, including in or near the National Parks. According to Horace Albright, an early Park Service Director, "Sagebrushers" were the early visitors who traveled primitive roads and camped their way to the National Parks on their own, as opposed the "Dudes" who traveled by train and motor coaches to stay in the grand (but expensive) lodges. We are Sagebrushers and we hope to encourage and inspire others in the same spirit of the original "Sagebrushers".
We hope to share great dispersed camping locations especially near the National Parks and other spectacular spots in the west. Here are our favorites!
Our approach to scoping out great camping locations, with emphasis on dispersed camping and low cost primitive campgrounds.
This is one of our favorite places because it is the nearest place to warm up in the cool season. It is also one of our favorite National Parks because they allow "dispersed camping" on most gravel roads if you are at least a mile from the pavement. So every camp is free, with no neighbors in sight, no noise, and a spectacular view! Here are some of our favorite sites to see and our favorite camping spots in Death Valley.
This was a paid tour for Four Wheel Camper owners led by Bob Wohlers of Off Road Safety Academy in conjunction with Four Wheel Campers. We stayed at spectacular beaches, learned some off-highway/overlanding techniques and met some really great people with a similar sense of adventure. A fantastic tour and highly recommended!
