Research was fairly simple, I spent time hanging out at the establishment and conversing with visitors. I asked about the culture, food, and their reasonfor visiting. I split my visits into two by having one in the morning, and one at night.
AM visitors ☀️Were more of a pop in. visitors who seen the pub in passing, online, or who'd come in some time before. Their visit typically prioritized convenience, or a favorite from the menu.
PM visitors 🌙 These were no doubt, 100%, the regulars! 😤so many people! packed to the walls! on a WEEK-NIGHT! ...thats something else brother. 👀
So much history, i can't imagine the group chat!😭 I wondered if groups planned their night around being there. I watched more visitors talking with staff, and looking to engage with me.😅
I left thinking...Wow! all of these wonderful things.
I pondered how a place with so much time, culture and reputation could function so long without a proper website. This created a passion in me to provide these awesome people with a product that can improve their experience with the pub and grill's digital experience.
This lead me into sketching up UI concepts. I had 3 words in mind, simple, modern, and comfortable.
My demographic was mostly labor workers, male, ranging from 30-50 years of age.
Having a simple UI would make the experience straight to the point, which is comfortable and familiar while updating the sites overall appearance to at'trap, i mean attract new visitors. 😅
I naturally went into crafting my low-fidelity wireframes (low-fi wireframes)
These help me to map out design decisions to eventually communicate with the rest of the team. In case there are any changes to be made, this part truly simplifies the process of making any changes.
With the previous site, there was a lot of missing information. It's very important for company websites to have the necessary information readily available for users, and potential visitors. From specials, service hours, events, and most importantly menu items.
I was concerned to hear user complaints about the lack of the food-menu within the site. 😬
I set out to gather the updated menu, and began designing.
It took a while, but I eventually sorted the menu into different categories. It was simple design system; name, ingredients, and pricing.
Creating the separate specials menu, allowed for the chefs specialties recipes to be highlighted. I personally felt this could help the chef during nights where they might be swamped. Through experience, specialty items are a lot easier to prepare.
Having a gallery is always a good touch in my opinion. I almost threw a fit when I seen the images previously on the site. Most were grainy, low quality, and even flipped in a way that made it difficult for users to see. This is a quick way to boost your exit rate! A decrease users interest. 😑
I was a bit anxious entering the design process. The previous logo on the site was literally a photo, of another photo, of a printout. This was honestly mind boggling!
I requested access to the previous design files, and discovered this was the only copy of the logo that they had. 😑
👀...
I instantly took to designing a new logo, my goal was to refine what was already there and apply my design process (simple, modern, comfortable). The font previously used stood out, but difficult to read from afar. The colors used were aranged oddly, leaving the image muddy.
I fought for a new direction, and explained to him that the logo from before doesn't present professionally, and need some new direction.
I created something that still contained design assets from the actual logo. I really liked the silhouette of the mermaid, so I created an line art -outline of the mermaid and presented again.
Loved with the mermaid design!
*sigh of relief*
😮💨
We visited the pub on a Tuesday night, which is weekly trivia night. It was truly the best time to come in, since it was packed from wall to wall. My brother was able to capture the true essence of the pub and grill, and gave me some time to hover and gather some more about the place.
During this visit I had gained an immense hub of knowledge. I met people who'd been regulars for almost 20 years, some who were almost everyday visitors. The place survived through the COVID-19 pandemic, through the support of loved ones were able to keep it alive! It was an honor.
