Yoga is for Everyone

Real yoga is for everybody. (Forget the magazine pictures of lycra-clad contortionists!) Breath awareness exercises, gentle stretches and relaxation are accessible to all, and many postures can be adapted to sitting versions instead of kneeling or standing. We should avoid pushing into anything that feels uncomfortable; if ever in doubt, moving gently back to balance and ease, to re-establish a deep, steady breath. Be patient and observant.

'Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.'

Nourish and strengthen

Yoga builds flexibility, strength and suppleness. It can also help to regulate blood pressure and boost the circulatory, digestive, respiratory and immune systems.

Calm your mind

As a union between body and mind, yoga facilitates a release of tension, reduces stress, improves mood and when practised regularly we start to feel more grounded and peaceful.

'Peace does not mean a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.'

What happens in a class?

We normally start and finish with relaxation, either lying down or sitting. Classes include a breath awareness focus and often a specific breathing exercise, progressing to combining movement with the breath, then lying, sitting and standing stretches with suggested modifications as required. It's a good idea to have a yoga mat and a cushion or folded blanket to sit on as well as some water. Wear any type of comfortable clothing which will allow you to move around in without feeling constricted. Classes are normally one hour long.
