One threat to habitat is the abundance of nonnative plants. In urban and suburban landscapes, nonnative plant species are often preferred because they require little maintenance and do not attract damaging insects. By planting native plants, everyone can help native songbirds by providing natural food sources for resident and migratory species.
NEW! SAFE North American Grasslands Coalition AZA Network
This community has been set up to discuss the importance of our
North American grasslands, coordinate messaging and outreach,
develop opportunities for cross collaborations between the various
SAFE grassland species programs, announce new initiatives for
conservation, research and education, upcoming events,
conferences, etc. and increase awareness and knowledge about one
of the most endangered ecosystems on earth. You can find the
network on the AZA website.
Visit the Audubon Plants For Birds website to look for plants native to your area.
Visit the Birds Canada - Gardening for Birds website for a comprehensive resource about planning a garden for birds.
"A WonderGrove for Birds" is an environmental science animated series that demonstrates the ways in which young learners in grades K-6 can develop an interest in their environment by focusing on the needs and behaviors of birds in and around their homes. Through this series, children will discover how birds help our environment and what we can do right now to create habitats and/or restore habitats where birds can thrive. Produced by Wonder Media and created by Terry Thoren, the former CEO of Klasky Csupo, Inc., the company that created The Wild Thornberrys, this series is based on Cornell Lab of Ornithology's 7 Simple Actions to Help Birds and Douglas Tallamy's book Nature's Best Hope. You can view all the videos at https://www.wonder.media/wondergrove-for-birds.
