Artist Statement: In this surrealist inspired piece, I chose to use substitution to juxtapose and compare the roles of the human liver and tea bags. The purpose of the human liver is to flush out and filter toxins, while a tea bag stops tea leaves from entering the cup of tea. I utilized nature motifs, including leaves, stems, and roots to demonstrate the natural process of detoxification that occurs in the digestive system. Throughout this piece, I attempted to convey that humans knowingly let too many toxins into their bodies and the environment. The dark mood and colors chosen for this work serve to show the negative physical impact of "toxic" behaviors and actions involved.
I really enjoyed making these bubble prints with dish soap and acrylic paint, I especially liked how the blue/black ones would drip. Could potentially explore as part of concentration
This was a quick trial of using watercolor overlaid with pen work, colors blended together on their own and then I followed where they intersected with pen
drawn from still life observation, attempted different pen work/mark making styles to add texture
This year I started using oil pastels a lot more and I liked the texture they created as well as blending colors on top of each other
I would like to try using oil pastels on toned gray paper more
I spent so long on this painting last year (months!), but I am still very proud of how it came out. I think the composition and colors I chose were successful
