This work was originally inspired by my annual visit to the Waltham Mills Open Studios and the work of artist Sarah Leon. At the Mills I was able to speak to her about her artistic practice, and her process for creating large-scale acrylic paintings from her imagination. In these works, she used color to create a sense of place, and I wanted to emulate that approach in my piece. This year, I made a goal to use more vibrant colors in my art, and aimed to work on large scale non-representational pieces. In this work I explored the transportive quality of a doorway from the perspective of looking down a hallway. This painting contains many layers as I began working on it in December, and finished in May. Each layer has different colors to provide depth to the colors on the layers on top. The composition of this work was intentional, and I applied deep purple on the edges of the canvas to vignette the scene. On top of the acrylic paint, I used glazing medium and alizarin crimson paint to achieve a unified final layer.
