Excellence for Scholarship

My scholarly interests focus on advancing teaching and learning through evidence-based educational practices, learner-centered innovation, technology integration, and systematic evaluation of educational impact. I collaborate with peers through committees such as the Development of the Broad Education and Foundation Course and Developing Medical Teachers. As a core member of the Technology Enhanced Learning Committee, I conduct faculty development sessions, mentor colleagues in educational technology, and support conversion of lectures into interactive videos. Outcomes from these initiatives have been shared through “Really Good Stuff” presentations.

I attended MOOCs workshops that enabled me to offer international-level courses on Fundamentals of Molecular and Cell Biology and a Certificate Course on Metabolic Bone Diseases. I have received SOTL grants for innovations in team-based learning and student-faculty research, with outcomes presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.

I hold fellowships from FAIMER, the International Union of Physiological Sciences, and the Higher Education Academy (UK), and I currently serve as a faculty advisor at FAIMER. As Chair of the Haile T. Debas Teachers Academy, I implemented peer-led mentoring clinics and structured feedback for unsuccessful applicants, significantly improving application success rates and faculty engagement.

With the emergence of artificial intelligence as a transformative tool in education, I proactively sought formal training and subsequently designed capacity development courses focused on the ethical use of AI in teaching, learning, and research. To date, more than 1,000 participants have completed these courses and are effectively applying AI within their educational and professional contexts. In recognition of the international relevance of this work, I was invited to deliver a short conference workshop at AMEE in 2024 and was selected as a program committee member for the Teaching and Facilitating Learning Committee at AMEE 2026. I have also conducted invited training sessions at institutions in India, Sri Lanka, and other regions.
