Excellence for Learner Assessment

I am involved in designing and implementing both traditional and innovative assessment strategies, including integrated short essays, MCQs, EMQs, viva scenarios, and laboratory sign-off assessments. I provide formative and summative feedback during problem-based learning sessions, research courses, and laboratory work. I routinely embed formative assessment into large classes, small group tutorials, and virtual learning spaces.

In 2019, I introduced structured formative assessment strategies in Year 2 MBBS, which continue to date. One example is the introduction of Pecha Kucha presentations as a formative assessment tool in the Year 1 foundation course. Students are assigned integrated basic and clinical science topics and deliver concise presentations. Prior to this activity, I conduct orientation sessions explaining the Pecha Kucha format, provide detailed guides, and share marking rubrics. Students reported that this approach enhanced their ability to synthesize information and present ideas succinctly. They also requested similar assessments in other modules.

Additional assessment strategies include online formative quizzes delivered through the virtual learning environment with option-wise feedback, Pit Stops introduced in the foundation module to provide guided practice with immediate clarification, team-based assessments aligned with problem-solving tasks, simulation-based assessments using AI-enabled tools, reflective writing to promote self-assessment, and peer feedback activities to foster collaborative learning. These approaches promote continuous learning, timely feedback, and development of higher-order thinking skills.

I am actively involved in coaching and one to one mentoring of students requiring additional academic support and have designed individualized teaching learning activities that enable remediation, skill development, and successful academic achievement. These efforts have been positively acknowledged by both faculty members and students.

I am regularly invited as an external examiner for UGME, Masters, and PhD thesis and synopsis viva at national and international universities. I serve as an active member of the MBBS interviewer panel and am involved in high stakes academic assessments, faculty deliberations, and maintenance of examination standards.

At the Masters and PhD level, I have designed and implemented authentic assessment strategies aligned with Education 5.0 standards, including practical assessments in laboratory biosafety, experimental processes, waste management, and fire safety. I have also developed real life assessment formats for synopsis evaluation and viva defence, focusing on problem solving, ethical decision making, and research readiness.
