As a committee, one of our mandates has been to collect reliable data on the racial climate within the department of SACSW. We are doing this through annual racial climate surveys (since January 2021) of all students who have taken at least one class in our department during the preceding fall semester.
The purpose of this survey is to understand the racial climate in the Sociology, Anthropology, Criminology, and Social Work Department from the perspective of students. Our goal is to use the results of this survey to enhance equity and racial justice and to ensure that all students feel welcomed and represented.
Overall, students report a positive assessment of our department’s racial climate. In 2024, 9 out of 10 students (90.5%) said they are satisfied or very satisfied with their SACSW courses. As in past years, students report an overall positive assessment of our department’s racial climate. More than 9 out of 10 students agreed or strongly agreed that faculty are respectful of people of different races and cultures (93.3%).
When 2024 data are disaggregated by race/ethnicity however, differences come into focus. Overall, white, non-Hispanic/Latinx students have a more positive assessment of the racial climate than students of color, with Black students in particular reporting the least positive assessment of our racial climate across many indicators.
Town Halls with BIPOC students and alumni are held each semester, hosted by the SACSW Antiracism Committee. Contact Prof. Brenda Westberry at westberryb@easternct.edu. Join us and make your voice heard!
