March 20, 2023

Hey Sunrise Movement Sacramento,

We're having our first in-person general meeting of 2023! If you’d like to get back into the groove of Sunrise or if you’d like to get involved for the first time, come on out! This will be a casual get together with snacks, with space for some getting to know each other, a bit of discussion, and a mini-training. We would love to see you all, so please register to let us know you’re coming!

We're scheduled to meet on April 1st from 3pm - 4:30pm, we'll announce the location next week, or earlier to registrants. Indoor masking will be required when not eating / drinking, and we encourage you to take a COVID-19 test in advance of arriving (ideally the day of the event). Snacks, masks, and rapid tests for onsite testing will be provided.

In the meantime, check out the following actions coming up tomorrow being put on by other organizations in our community, and a recent event recap!

Tomorrow - Act Against Fossil Funding

March 21st @ 11:30am - Third Act Against The Dirty Banks

Activists in Sacramento will march, rally, sing, dance, and die-in through Capitol Mall from 11:30am - 12:35pm on March 21st. Check out the following invitation from Third Act Sacramento, a local chapter of the national movement of elders mobilizing to take action.

"Third Act Sacramento is hosting a local action as part of a National Day of Action on 3.21.23 (March 21, 2023), when people across the country will withdraw their money and cut up their credit cards from the Four Big Dirty Banks: Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Citibank; these are the biggest funders of fossil fuel projects.

The goals of this action are:

1) To shame these banks for bankrolling our climate crisis

2) To let the banks know that we won’t be complicit in the destruction of the earth

3) To pressure the banks to stop funding fossil fuel projects, and

4) To have fun while helping to create a healthier, more livable future.

This National Day of Action is for all ages, and all are encouraged to sign the pledge to move your money. Volunteers in Third Act Sacramento have created a factsheet on local alternative banking options that do not fund global heating and destruction of our precious earth. For more information about the Day of Action and other creative protests in the lead-up to March 21, go to https://thirdact.org/national-day-of-action/ or contact us at thirdactsac@gmail.com.

Tomorrow - Trans Visibility in Sacramento

March 21st @ 5pm - City Council meeting on Trans Visibility

Community members have been regularly showing up to Sacramento City Council meetings in solidarity with the community demands of Decarcerate Memphis. On March 21st during its regular meeting, the council will have a presentation on the item of Transgender Visibility Week. At a time when governments across the country are pushing anti-LGBTQ and anti-trans policies, Sacramento has seen a rise of far right hate groups threatening local LGBTQ+ events. Community members are planning to show up and give public comment during tomorrow's council meeting.

Sacramento Punks With Lunch will be hosting a mutual aid table outside of Sacramento City Hall (915 I Street, Sacramento CA 95814) at 4:45pm before the meeting. At 5pm the meeting starts, with agenda item B dedicated to a special presentation on Transgender Visibility Week. You can review the agenda and instructions for either in-person or remote viewing or participation: here

Note that if you give a public comment, your comment will be added to the public record. Audio & video of your testimony will be recorded and made publicly accessible on the City of Sacramento website for archival, along with the listed name you provide. You are not required to provide a legal name to give public comment, and we encourage people making public comment to take any measures necessary to protect their identity and privacy. Any member of the public can comment on each agenda item, the council limits each public comment to 2 minutes.
