THEME : YOUR CULTURE IS YOUR STRENGTH

The SAC MAS STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP gives students an opportunity to submit scholarly and/or creative work in response to the theme: YOUR CULTURE IS YOUR STRENGTH. Students are encouraged to explore important ideals such as equity, social justice, multiculturalism, diversity, and cultural pluralism or issues such as racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, ableism, social inequity, or injustice. Submissions may choose to address one or a range of these topics.

ELIGIBILITY

SAC students who are currently enrolled in a SAC MAS course (see list below) or have successfully completed one or more SAC MAS courses are eligible to participate in this competition. All submissions must be original, unpublished, and previously uncompensated.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

· Completion of the entry form is required for your submission to be considered.

· All submissions should be clearly labeled with the title and name of participants.

· If your research includes human subjects, you must submit a confirmation email from that subject verifying he/she/they are okay with having this submission published online.

WRITTEN WORKS GUIDELINES

· Margins: One-inch borders

· Font: Times New Roman, size 12

· Include page numbers on your entry

· Document type: .doc, .docx or .pdf

· Research/Critical Essays: Up to 4 pages (double-spaced). Be sure to include a bibliography or list of works cited. Endnotes or Works Cited/Bibliography will be counted separately. All essays should conform to the citation system appropriate to your discipline. Include page numbers.

· Personal Reflection: Up to 4 pages (double-spaced).

· Creative Writing: Short stories may not exceed 4 pages (double-spaced)

· Poetry: One poetry submission (one long poem or several short poems) per student, but may not exceed 4 pages (double-spaced). Your submission will be judged in its entirety as opposed to individual works/poems.

CREATIVE WORKS GUIDELINES

· Performance Category: Performance entries may be, but are not limited to: multimedia presentations, photography, musical compositions, comedic or theatrical presentations, films, performance art, movies, dance, painting, sculpture, and action/community service projects.

· Due to COVID, all entries must be submitted in a digital format.

· Supporting documents/explanation of that work is encouraged. Submissions should include a fully developed abstract, which contains the title of the submission and a clear thesis and establishes the relevance of the submission to the competition’s central themes

· For multimedia submissions, please provide a YouTube or other similar link.

· Presentations, compositions, films, and performance entries are limited to 10 minutes in length.

· Photography entries may include up to 4 photos.

· A painting, sculpture, or action/community service project should be limited to one submission.

AWARDS

2 students will be chosen. The maximum award per student is $500. The SAC Financial Aid Office will distribute this award either in the form of a check or a direct deposit into a student’s bank account. Winners may have the opportunity to present their work at an award ceremony, to be determined in the future. In addition, the winning entries will be featured on the SAC MAS web page and social media pages. All entries will be judged according to the quality of the work and relevance to the scholarship’s central theme.
