Goal: Students will recall and apply their knowledge of the Foundations of SI, specifically how it relates to the practical applications of the material in SI sessions. By the end of session, students should be able to communicate their understanding of the content.
Instructions:
For the first five minutes, participants will add their Informal Quiz answers to the appropriate poster papers placed throughout the room. If their answer has already been written by another participant, they should put a star next to the answer to indicate agreement. For the true/false question, the group will add a star under "true" or "false", depending on their answer. After five minutes, the facilitator will lead the group through each question until the facilitator is satisfied with the groups' overall understanding.
Potential checks for understanding:
What might be the difference between learning and studying? Why might collaboration be important in the learning process?
How do these values relate to the overall goal of SI?
If a student really wants to be successful, which service should they use?
Why might we not be able to cover all course content? What about the content that doesn't get covered: what should students do for that?
Instructions:
*At least one participant will need technology for this activity*
The facilitator will break students up into three groups through a numbering system (1, 2, 3). Once separated, each group will be assigned a specific part of session (opening, main content, or closing). Group 1 will have the opening, group 2 will have main, and group 3 will have closings. In their respective groups, they will come up with 3 important aspects about their assigned part of session that they have in their notes, two things to avoid during that part of session, and one question for the group. Groups will have 6 minutes to come up with their 3-2-1 (about 2 minutes per section). While they are doing this, groups will be assigned a portion of the whiteboard and a “scribe” should write down the groups 3-2-1. After the 6 minutes is up, a spokesperson from each group will have 2 minutes to share out their 3-2-1 to the larger group.
The facilitator will lead a discussion on facilitation strategies. The discussion will go through each strategy and have students identify how they utilize the facilitation strategies in their day to day lives.
Instructions:
In pairs, each student will take two minutes to write a short elevator pitch for SI. After two minutes, turn to your partner and take turns sharing your elevator pitch. As time allows, give feedback to your partner.
