Biography
Ryo Aihara is a conductor for a mandolin orchestra. He earned a Ph.D. in Engineering from Kobe University, where he studied conducting under Prof. Yoshio Saida.
He began his musical journey at Suwa Seiryo High School in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, discovering a passion for classical guitar and serving as president of the Classical Guitar Club in his senior year, leading the club to win the Asahi Shimbun Award at the 36th High School Guitar Mandolin Festival, which is known as national competition in Japan.
Ryo Aihara served as conductor of the Kobe University Mandolin Club. He has since led numerous ensembles, including the Bremen Orchestra of Mandolin and Mandolin Orchestra "Horizon", and in 2019 he conducted a cycle concert for the works of Toshifumi Shibasaki. In 2016, he refined his technique at a conductor's workshop with Akashi Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 2021 he founded and now directs the Tone Cluster Mandolin Orchestra.
Aihara’s programs bridge the mandolin orchestra with a wide spectrum of musical styles. He regularly commissions new works and has conducted the world premieres of Hideyasu Endo's "DRAGON WINK", Ken Aihara's "Caucasus Circuit", and Yoshinao Kobayashi's "Summer Song".
