Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy – The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.
The attached document is an interview I conducted surrounding evaluations, collaboration, and the day-to-day practices of and in an educational setting. The goal for this assignment was aimed at furthering and gaining a broader and deeper sense of understanding from the experiences and perspectives of a full-time educator on ways to incorporate and maintain the professionalism of a competent teacher.
The Artifact I chose incorporates the Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 9, which states “The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession”. Throughout the interview and the engagement in the reflection and write-up, I have highlighted the importance of evaluations, collaboration, and the partnerships formed in a positive school community.
Talking to and conducting the interview along with being able to hone in on particular areas of education I learned that communication and collaboration are 2 key essentials to professional relationships and positive growth. I have learned that through the use of a productive, well-thought-out, and clear dialogue surrounding concepts of evaluations, collaboration, and the day-to-day subtleties in an educational setting you can create partnerships that strengthen your educational mission and deeper understanding of ethical practices in the classroom and community. Therefore, this process is highly beneficial through the use of listening, modeling, and carrying out a professional and sincere demeanor that displays respect, advocacy, and leadership towards students, families, and the community.
