These guidelines keep the jams smooth, musical, and fun. We’re not about rules — we’re about making sure everyone can contribute and the groove stays solid.
Groove comes first — lock to the drummer’s pocket; if you can’t hear the rhythm clearly, hold back until it’s solid.
Shape the groove, don’t noodle — the first 1–2 minutes belong to the rhythm section; no solos or busy playing until the foundation is set.
One Director per tune — they count off, cue transitions, and shape dynamics; they’re a guide, not a boss, keeping the jam alive and flowing.
Timing and volume matter — solos and grooves stick to agreed lengths; if anyone can’t hear the kick, bass, or each other, turn down first; avoid loudness wars so the groove can breathe.
Roles and responsibilities —
Rhythm section (drums, bass, guitar, keys): anchor the pocket; during solos, be dynamic — drop out, simplify, or respond to the soloist’s phrasing.
Horns / leads / melodic instruments: build motifs, add texture, or rest when not soloing.
Vocals / spoken word / rap: keep phrases short and rhythmic; pocket first.
Etiquette in action — respect everyone’s time in the spotlight; encourage newer players; no ego, no gear shaming; keep the vibe positive and collaborative; deep listening is your most important instrument.
✨ “Groove is the law, space is your friend, and listening is everything.”
