Dia dhuit agus failte - hello and welcome. I am Ruth Bennington and I teach accounting at Moorpark College. Like many of you, I was a first-generation college student, and an immigrant. I am a wife, a mom to four adult sons, and I have lived in Moorpark for more than 30 years. I love to spend time with my family (which can be difficult as they are spread across country in San Jose, San Diego, Boston, and Pittsburgh). I also love to read, to cook and to travel. I have also recently taken up gardening (on a very small scale).
I have created this website so that you can get a preview of my classes and see if you think they are a good fit for you. What is included in here applies to any and all of my courses. Currently, I teach both Financial Accounting (ACCT M110) and Managerial Accounting (ACCT M120). I love what I do and I hope to see you in one of my classes.
I do not want anyone in my class to feel isolated or abandoned. If you are an online student, there are no required synchronous meetings. However, we can still meet on Zoom or in person on campus. I love to get to know my students.
Think of our class as a community. Through various assignments, student hours, and optional live sessions, I hope you will feel that you are a valuable member of our class.

We acknowledge Moorpark College occupies the unceded traditional land of the Chumash people who have stewarded it throughout generations. As we honor the Chumash people with gratitude, we commit to learning how we may be better stewards of this land we inhabit as well. We seek to build relationships with the Chumash community through academic pursuits, partnerships, historical recognitions and community service as these relationships are foundational for inclusive and equitable education and community engagement.
To find your class, sign into your my.vcccd.edu portal. (Please use Chrome and disable pop-up blockers). In the top, right corner, click on My Courses and you will be brought to your Canvas dashboard. If you don't see your class, click on the All Courses link, find it there and "star" it by clicking the star next to the course name so it will show up on your dashboard.
If you have problems accessing the portal, we have support for students at Online Student Support. If you have any difficulty with Canvas, click the Help icon in your account navigation bar (at the very left of the Canvas page). From there you can search the Canvas Guides or contact the Helpline.
I am passionate about social justice and I believe that education is the way to eliminate generational poverty.
My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that all students can succeed and my role is to walk with them on their journey. I embrace social justice and equity, and actively promote their importance in my classes. I want my students not just to master the material, but also to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that they will use in all walks of life. I want them to develop a love for learning.
I promote a collegial, respectful and enquiring classroom ethos and encourage questions, discussions, and feedback. I am a member of an organization whose mission is the elimination of generational poverty through education, and I try to live that mission every day. To quote Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
