Cultural and natural heritage are crucial in shaping community identity, unity, and well-being. Their role as a key driver for sustainable development is particularly vital in rural areas facing economic, social, and environmental challenges. In June 2022, UNESCO hosted the "Sustainable Rural Regeneration" conference at its headquarters. The goal was to exchange knowledge and foster discussions on the future of rural development within and beyond Europe. The event united practitioners, rural development experts, local communities engaged in heritage-led initiatives, and representatives from the European Commission and EU-funded projects.The EU's Horizon 2020-funded RURITAGE project was central to this effort. Utilizing Cultural and Natural Heritage, RURITAGE introduced a novel approach to rural regeneration, aimed at promoting sustainable growth and increasing competitiveness. The two-day conference included interactive workshops on rural futures, dialogues with top European researchers and practitioners, and sessions for Member States. It also featured two sessions open to the public and live-streamed for wider engagement. The first day saw RURITAGE participants present their plans for rural regeneration, alongside discussions on measuring the impact of such initiatives, the RURITAGE Digital Resource Ecosystem, and the project's innovative strategy.
