Our fall project will be a linguistic landscape analysis using your own photos of:
You can focus on simplified or traditional characters, and any variety of spoken Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka, etc).
You will need to present a digital slideshow or poster, including
opening and closing using our Speech Notes format (here).
coherent, logical organization of images and analysis, focusing around the question: Who are these signs and information for?
support with evidence (8 to 10 photos containing Chinese text):
photos taken by you personally of printed or written Chinese on public signs, notifications, advertisements, tombstones, etc., ideally in Hawaii (e.g. near your home or somewhere you visit locally), but from your travels off-island can work too
photos you found online taken by other people (Yelp!, this website, etc)
analysis represented with a graph, chart, etc. made by you
your audience is the teacher, your current classmates, future students in this class, and, hopefully if the timing works right, a guest who is already familiar with Chinese signs and text used in public spaces.
