Welcome to Ready, Set, LEARN!
My name is Cheryl Achenbach and I am the owner and lead instructor here at RSL. I am a certified Reading Specialist with over 25 years of classroom teaching experience. I am currently a WCDSB Literacy Support Teacher where I travel to a variety of local schools supporting teachers with their literacy instruction and intervention programming.
Teaching children to read is one of my favourite things to do! I use the most current research and evidence-based teaching and assessment practices to provide literacy intervention programs that will help your child become a more confident and successful student!
My home-based studio is located in the beautiful Galt Community at 89 Glenmorris Street in Cambridge with over 450 square feet of learning space. Check out some pictures of our studio space below.
Our Literacy Program
For our "Ready, Set, READ!" program, we combine the most recent reading research, evidence-based teaching practices, and targeted structured literacy activities to create a reading and writing intervention program to help your child become a more confident and accurate reader!
Word decoding skills, phonics, reading fluency and comprehension skills are at the heart of every small group lesson.

Why SMALL-GROUP Tutoring?
Why do I use a small-group tutoring model instead of a large-group, like many tutoring franchises or a one-on-one model?
The answer is simple.
I follow the research.
Learning science research has shown that small-group learning actually improves academic achievement, relationships with peers and teachers, and promotes psychological well-being. ( Fryer, R. 2011 )
Small-group instruction offers an environment for teachers to tailor instruction to meet the specific needs of their students and provides students with extensive opportunities to express what they know and receive feedback from other students and the teacher. (Goldenberg, 1993).
Also, students who may struggle to participate in front of a large group. The one-on-one attention they receive from small-group instruction activities can boost the confidence of students who may otherwise have a hard time joining the conversation.
As a classroom teacher, I see the benefits of small-groups or "learning pods" and how effective they can be at all grade levels. This is why it is a core dynamic in all my tutoring programs.
