Every trust has different rules about audits, service evaluations, and other projects. In order to take part in this project you need to have approval from your Trust's audit department (or equivalent).
We can help you with this: click here to view and download some useful documents (including a short version of the protocol and a PDF copy of the data capture form that you can forward to the Audit department).
Sometimes this approval can take a while to come through. If your Trust is happy, you can use printed versions of the PDF data capture form to start recording data, and then upload to the online data entry form once your approvals are in place.
Please let us know by email when you have this approval - the best email address for this is: joseph.alderman@nhs.net
Again, all hospitals will have different ways of recording operation details. Most theatres will have a logbook of all of the procedures which have taken place in that theatre: this may be a good place to start.
You'll need to nominate a 2-week window of your choice in which to collect data - you can do this any way you like as long as the data you collect is accurate.
Some people will find it easier to collect data retrospectively - nominating a 2-week window in the past and inputting data for all patients who underwent emergency laparotomy in this period. This may involve asking for physical paper records to be retrieved, which may take a long time in some hospitals
Other people will find it easier to collect data prospectively - nominating a start date and then inputting data for all patients in the subsequent 2-weeks who undergo emergency laparotomy. The downside to this method is that it may take longer, and some data may not be available immediately (eg. the patient's length of stay)
We recommend you collect data retrospectively, but the choice is yours.
It doesn't matter which 2-week window you choose to collect data for, but please don't change it once you've started collecting data.
You will need to complete a data capture form for each patient who has undergone emergency laparotomy during the data capture window you have chosen.
The easiest way to collect data is by using the online data entry form. A link to access this will be emailed to you once you register as a data collector. The system uses a service called REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) - this is secure, encrypted, access limited and well recognised as the gold standard means of collecting and storing research data.
Alternatively you can collect data using a printed copy of the PDF data capture form (click here to view and download this and other useful documents). This may be useful if you don't yet have Trust approval for online data collection - please make sure they are happy for you to start offline data capture if this is the case. It may also be useful if you have poor internet connection where you are collecting data.
Please note - any data captured on printed copies of the PDF data capture form will eventually need to be uploaded to the online data entry form.
