The environment should fit into the world of Tomb Raider, so using Tomb Raider as an inspiration can help me stay true to their style.
Uncharted is a very similar style as Tomb Raider, but their environments, mostly focus on outside ruins.
Resident Evil: Village has some great level design. The game has different areas, with different aesthetics.
The order is an odd on this list. It's a steampunk era style game, heavily relying on narrative. That shows in their environments, the sheer amount of detail and attention to small environmental narrative factors makes it really interesting.
An old often forgotten classic of Ubisoft's glory days. The Prince of Persia, has some of the most intriguing level design to date in my opinion.
After seeing the Tomb Raider examples in class, I knew I wanted to include some sort of transitional environment. I started looking at images that got me inspired, and really liking the contrast between the more industrial style and the ancient style.
Shape
Keeping in mind that shapes can influence a player and their behavior I opted for a gate which acts as a sort of portal, it's the clear way forward, yet it's also visibly locked.
Lights Shafts + Lights
Since Unity URP doesn't have access to Volumetric Light Shafts I created my own using the unity particle system. The idea behind this is simple using light Shafts and Spot Lights to highlight important areas in a way that still feels natural enough. In this scene I utilize this combination to give the player some idea of where to look by creating the effect of sunlight hitting the objectives.
Placement
I really thought about placement in this scene, and I was struggling with it. I didn't want to make all the paths to easy to follow, but not too hard to find. I hid one of the paths so it is better visible if you approach it from the other side. Besides that the other two paths basically branch out from the main "Hub" area. This helps the player to better understand and navigate around the environment, whilst also giving a good indication where to start.
