Lara was born on February 14th, 1992, the only child of Lord Richard and Lady Amelia Croft.
Lara's early years were spent in the company of her doting parents. Her mother, who was an artist, worked from home and spent much of her time with her daughter, playing with her and giving her piano lessons.
Lady Croft died in a plane crash when Lara was very young. Her death inspired Lord Croft's obsession with finding the key to immortality, which in turn resulted in him becoming somewhat neglectful of Lara.
Lara was an intelligent child, and early on was placed in classes with students a year older to compensate. Nevertheless, Lara was often bored at school, which led to her getting in trouble for daydreaming and not paying attention in class. She often asked her father to take her with him when he went on digs, to alleviate her boredom.
The sound of a gunshot brought her to her father's study, where she found him having apparently taken his own life, leaving Lara an orphan, and her last encounter with her father having been a fight.
Lara was left in the care of Roth, with whom she formed a surrogate father-daughter relationship. Roth's job kept him away for extended periods of time, leaving Lara to be alone for much of her adolescence. As a result, Lara became quite introverted.
Roth took her as part of his crew on the expedition to Yamatai, which is the start of the modern 'Tomb Raider'.
Whilst the Tomb Raider series play out in the modern world, the games mostly center around exploring uncharted territories and tombs. The world allows space for mysticism, magic and mythology. Various creatures which have been described in various civilization's myths and legends.
Areas are often ancient and unstable. They're often big, making Lara small in comparison. The use of grim and dark colors accentuates the feeling of isolation/desperation/solitude.
The Tomb of the Forgotten
The tomb was build when the Incan civilization was still around. They build this tomb to dispose of their cursed warriors and prevent these curses from spreading. These mummified corpses are still guarding this tomb. But even in the Incan years this tomb was well hidden, and soon forgotten about. There were a few rumors about this tomb written down by the Incans. It's rumored that the tomb was host to an ancient weapon forged by the gods.
The Warrior's Sword. This sword once wielded by the a cursed warrior, was rumored to be the origin of the curse, and all warriors who fought in it's proximity.
Lara discovers stories documenting the "Tomb of the Forgotten" in her fathers journals. A tomb located in South-America, but the exact location isn't known. Determined to find this hidden tomb, she travels to Peru. After gathering clues and information on the whereabouts of the tomb. She managed to narrow it down to a specific valley, somewhere in the woods the tomb entrance had to be hidden.
Father's Journal refers to three artefact wielded by three outcast of a local Incan tribe. Supposedly these artefact got buried with the outcasts.
Not much is known about the three outcast, the journal just refers to each individual outcast.
The Warrior: The leader of the three, he possessed a spear so strong it would penetrate any surface.
The Eagle: The most perceptive of the three, possessing a bow that would never miss it's mark.
The Trapper: The most agile of the three, carrying a special bola which could trap any living creature for an eternity.
Besides these notes, there is an small stone tablet with a translations. Engraved on it: "Banished for unspoken crimes these fools, cast out those who'd wield those cursed tools."
Lara arrives at the Tomb, only to find it locked by a stone table, telling the tales of the cursed outcasts. There tales together are present, but each misses a stone tablet of their own saga.
Lara sets out into the forest to locate the three tablets.
"An epic tale of a man who wanted to hunt a mythic creature."
"A monstrous journey of a woman, in search of redemption."
"A sad tragedy of a man, who lost everything."
The three Tablets are scattered around the forest. And each location tells a different story.
The first tablet can be found at the Trinity Radio Outpost, mysteriously there isn't a single living soul anymore. The Tablet can be found at the sunbeams, in the pile of corpses.
The second tablet can be found at an old abandoned digsite. Artifacts of a previous battle are scattered around the area. The tablet is amidst the battlefield.
The third tablet can be acquired by backtracking a bit to the starting area, where a small path branches off to an ancient shrine. It was probably used in honor of their ancestors. The tablet is on the center table.
When Lara found the tomb, she was shocked to see that Trinity had already beaten her to the tomb. Although seemingly all Trinity personal have died of unknown causes.
Trinity has set up a remote radio station in the forest, and have left supply crates scattered throughout the area. Like Lara, Trinity was hoping to find a way into the tomb, to obtain the three artifacts. But their plan fell flat when a mysterious entity left their bodies (or rather bones) for Lara to discover.
Seeing as Lara wasn't the first to discover the entrance to the tomb, there is a heavy Trinity presence in the likes of material.
