What do I mean by "tunnel song"?
When I was growing up, I always lived life as if it were a movie; striving to make all my memories movie-worthy. This desire stems from my deep love for film, and my theatrical nature in general. In high school, I found myself drawn to coming-of-age stories as a blueprint for my potential experiences. Constantly searching for those moments in life where the perfect song is playing in the background and you feel like you are living in your own coming-of-age movie!
During this journey, I discovered the film The Perks of Being a Wallflower, based on Stephen Chbosky's novel of the same name. In this story, the main characters discuss being "infinite" and the idea that this feeling can come from the perfect song and moment. The famous "tunnel scene" has Emma Watson's character, Sam, standing -- arms extended -- at the back of a truck soaring through the Pittsburgh tunnel, as "Heroes" by David Bowie plays in the background. This is her ethereal moment; her moment to ultimately feel "infinite".
This profound feeling is something I've come to understand and finally resonate with, as I've grown up. I found that music has the ability to make me feel eternal. I've been developing this playlist for some time now, a rhapsody of music that makes me feel "infinite"!
This playlist includes several "bangers" including "Runnin' (Lose it All)" by Naughty Boy and Beyonce, "Cosmic Love" by Florence + the Machine, "Sweet Disposition" by Temper Trap, and "My Tears Becoming a Sea" by M83. Below I will dive into how I chose some of the songs for this playlist. Each song tells its own story, each with an individual avenue to grant the listener the feeling of being "infinite".
Not only is this my favourite song of all time, but it also justifiably has a spot on this playlist. Delta Spirit's emotional ballad explodes with music as it unfolds. This is my tunnel song.
Off of Cyrus' EP She Is Coming, "Mother's Daughter" is a melody cry for freedom and the power in femininity. This powerful anthem deeply resonates with me.
This epic amalgamation of sounds is absolutely brain tickling. Perfume Genius's Otherside is the perfect tunnel song for someone who is looking to drown everything out and really experience being "infinite".
This song is my best friend's personal tunnel song! Lorde's Green Light is an epic power ballad which transports the listener into a new reality of absolute clarity.
Annie and Owen is the ending song for the incredible limited series Maniac. Dan Romer's 5-minute closer takes the listener on quite the emotional journey. Every time my friends and I listen to this song we say we feel like we're in a new mindset!
Landslide by Fleetwood Mac is the official tunnel song fro the Perks of Being a Wallflower novel, so it had to be included in this playlist! Not only is Fleetwood Mac my favourite band, but Landslide is also one of my favourite songs of theirs.
Heroes by David Bowie is the tunnel song played in the Perks of Being a Wallflower movie. Emma Watson's character, Sam, has an epiphany during their school dance and brings her friends to the tunnel to experience the feeling of being "infinite" with her. This song makes me feel like I'm in a movie montage and is deserving of its spot on this playlist!
