Online Teaching Effectiveness and Impact
Online Teaching Effectiveness and Impact
Throughout my teaching career I have always been open to feedback and suggestions for improvement on how to make my courses better. I work to add multiple perspectives on my courses and take great value in the ratings and ideas for changes that students provide. In this section I share some of the feedback given to me and changes I have made to improve my teaching.
As course coordinator for MGMT 303: Principles of Management I am responsible for teaching large sections of students. Over the last 5 years I have taught over 7,000 students. Below is an average ranking of the past 2 years of overall teach and course evaluations. To the left is a PDF of all my rankings for all courses over the past 5 years including the specifics questions from student evaluations. My average score for rating in teaching is 4.38 and overall reviews for courses is 4.34. I have consistently had students personally thank me via email and in person for my teaching and course design. I have also been recognized through the Stearns Center for Teaching and Faculty Excellence (CTFE)’s “Thank a Teacher” program by MGMT 303 students:
Professor Rosenbusch has been one of my favorite professors because she makes lectures entertaining as well as very applicable to the real world. Her past experience makes her a great person to teach management and she has enforced my opinion of majoring in management as well as helping me realize that I might want to focus on being a consultant. I really appreciate that she encourages her students to reach out to her. I am very grateful to have been part of her class this semester. - Kelly Mejia Posadas
Dear Dr. Rosenbusch,
I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for the wonderful course you taught this semester. Although we did not interact personally, I want to let you know how much I appreciate the effort you put into making the course so well-organized and easy to follow. Your well-structured modules, clear instructions, accurate dates, and visible documents - that did not require to be downloaded every time, made it much easier for me to manage my studies while working full-time. I especially appreciate your commitment to timely grading and your professional approach to recording your lectures. It made the course engaging and accessible. I also want to take this opportunity to express my admiration for your dedication to teaching and for the care you put into creating a positive and effective learning environment. Your professionalism and commitment to excellence are truly inspiring, and I hope more professors would follow your example. Thank you again for a great semester. Miguel Torres Barrios
Thank you Professor Rosenbusch for all your hard work and dedication. I appreciate your teachings which helped me gain a lot of knowledge about management and has changed my perception about the managerial roles. Stay Safe and Blessed. I wish you all the best in everything you do. 😊
Thank you. Juliet Agbale

(2023-2024)
Throughout my time at Mason I have served as a mentor in several capacities. This past year I have served as a Canvas mentor. In Spring 2024 I went through the 8 week bootcamp to learn the new LMS-Canvas. Over the last year I have assisted in webinars, conferences and one-on-one trainings with other faculty to share my knowledge and expertise. I will continue to learn and grow in the technology and share my understanding of the tools and tips with others.
During the Innovations in Teaching and Learning conference at Mason I have presented for the last 6 years some of my findings and tips to online learning and teaching outcomes. It is important to share what we have learned with one another. I also like to take in what others have found through lessons learned and continue the conversation to grow and develop.
Recommendation from:
Shawn Zelman, MGMT adjunct instructor
I am Shawn Taylor Zelman, an adjunct professor at George Mason University (GMU) since 2011. I have had the privilege of working with Dr. Rosenbusch since she joined GMU. Throughout this time, due to Dr. Rosenbusch’s hard work and tenacity, I have seen the MGMT 303 curriculum evolve into a robust in-person, online and hybrid course. I am most impressed with how she considers what the student needs to excel in this course. Dr. Rosenbusch is always looking to improve processes, course delivery methods, and how best to communicate with each student. She demonstrates strong leadership, administrative and organizational skills. Dr. Rosenbusch is an active listener regularly communicating and providing pre-written content to the adjunct team to make our experience easier. In addition, she is ready to handle any challenge and is able to pivot to realign the course to deal with, for example, the pandemic. She is extremely talented with an incredible intellect. I am always amazed how she handles her teaching load, administrative tasks, managing numerous adjuncts and still responds to students’ inquiries in a timely manner. She is able to multi-task and handles her work and life with grace and style.
Since being at Mason I have continued to take on more leadership and administrative duties. My major leadership responsibility is Course Coordinator of MGMT 303: Principles of Management. When hired in 2015 the class size was 102 it has now grown to over 700 students each semester. I have developed a system to manage the curriculum design and delivery of this foundational course. I have developed a talent pipeline of instructors. I interview, hire and train recitation instructors. I am constantly recruiting new doctoral students and adjunct instructors for our courses. I provide training twice a year on Blackboard/Canvas and Connect for all instructors to make sure everyone is prepared and comfortable with the technology and layout. Over the last 9 years I have hired 30 individuals. It is a microcosm for a small business. I have hired and fired instructors so that we have the best learning experience for our Mason students. I take pride in developing rigorous curricula for all instructors to use for MGMT 303. Each week for the hybrid (face to face recitations) I provide a lesson plan for the chapter along with teaching materials to support the instructors including PowerPoint and teambuilding materials. One student commented to me this week—"are you the professor that creates all the amazing activities we do in class?” When I said yes—he thanked me. It is little things like this that make this job rewarding.
I have carefully selected the case studies, developed the discussion prompts, the reflection questions, the team project guidelines, and quizzes/exams. I have developed rubrics for all graded assignments so that all instructors are grading in a uniform manner.
Sample Rubric & Guidelines: Organizational Profile & Interview Questions
I have spent the last four years working with the instructional designers to perfect the Blackboard/Canvas shell for all MGMT 303 recitation sections. I course copy it over each semester for the instructors, so the course looks uniform and is easy for the students to follow.
For hybrid courses I organize and develop activities to support the core content and provide weekly meetings with instructors to provide tips and suggestions for execution. I have developed a training manual for both online and hybrid sections. It is a comprehensive outline of each module and class each week.
Instructor Manuals:

In terms of administrative duties, I send out weekly reminders of all tasks that need to be completed by the instructors. I compose a sample announcement that includes all the items that the students need to complete for each module. I monitor the Blackboard/Canvas sites to ensure that grading is being done in a timely and fair manner. I hold periodic check-in via Zoom for the instructors to touch base with me and ask questions. I provide feedback to the instructors on their performance and have had to place some instructors on performance improvement plans. I solicit feedback from instructor at the midpoint and end of every semester to make changes and improvements to the course. I maintain an open-door policy so that instructors can email or call me at any point they are having issues or need assistance. I periodically substitute for instructors when they might have a conflict like a conference presentation or business travel. I serve as a liaison for the instructors when student problems arise and meet with instructors as needed. This role is usually enacted because of the team project and group conflict. I also submit any honor code violations that arise. I meet with students during office hours to review grades and exams when needed. As the lead instructor I am also the one responsible for submitting final grades. The overall experience in this class comes from a well-developed team which I believe that we have instituted for this course.
I have worked with our department to formulate our assurance of learning (AOL) for our accreditation process. We have identified several classes including one of my upper-level courses that we will utilize the final deliverable to measure one of our MGMT AOLs. I collect data using my instrument the Global Skills Inventory (GSI) at no cost to the school. We have been using the GSI with our MBA & MSM students to assess their intercultural competencies after the global residency program. We have identified that global skills is one of the areas we would like to assess in the AOL process. I will continue to work with the AOL committee to analyze the data and identify a baseline for our student development. I serve on the Costello College of Business AOL committee, and I have spent the past few summers analyzing and scoring the student papers based on the rubric we developed to assess for ethics within our undergraduate population. I created a module on ethics for MGMT 498 to close the loop on the low scores of the ethics competency. I incorporated my understanding of online learning into the ethical curriculum to be engaging and support the learning objective. I overviewed the module with all the instructors and worked with the instructor designers to embed into the Blackboard/Canvas shells. Because of these actions I was nominated by someone on campus to be recognized for my actions
“Katie helped the accreditation team to create a review module on business ethics that could be deployed actor our undergraduate capstone course to reinforce student learning. We appreciate her help!!”
I hope this portfolio has provided you with a snapshot of my teaching and instructional design capabilities. I love the challenge of creating and designing unique learning spaces for students to grow and develop both online and in person. I pride myself on continuously learning to improve upon the foundational knowledge that I have gained along my online journey. I am always gaining new insights from my students each semester on how to help create a better experience for them and enhance the learning outcomes. I am a life long learner and know that I will continue to work and develop these skills for years to come.
