Learning in Week 9

This week we have been learning about geometry. We learnt what symmetry was and how for a shape to be symmetrical it has to be the same on both sides as if there was a mirror there and it was a reflection.

Here are the hexagons with their shape that they made using symmetry.

We also learned about patterns. Our patterns could be shapes, e.g. circle square triangle circle square triangle or colours, e.g red blue green red blue green. Have a look at Zachary's pattern that he made!

We are learning how to use collage and assemblage to create a picture. This includes using different textures, materials and ways of colouring. We drew the outline of a Morepork using pencil. We practiced our light pencil sketching so that the lines would not be able to be seen later. Then we coloured our bird using pastels, trying to blend the colours to make it look realistic. We stuck feathers on our birds and then began to collage our backgrounds, using different colours to show the difference between the tree and night sky. Here is a sneak peek of what the birds look like. Look out for our birds at the arts festival!

Congratulations to our children for all saying their talks about a NZ bird or insect. They were very informative and clearly a lot of effort had gone into practicing them! We had 3 students say their talk to the Junior School. Have a listen!

On Tuesday the 6th of June Room 5 and Room 6 went on a trip to the Arataki Visitor's Centre. We saw a lot of interesting things, and it was great to compare what we saw there to what we have seen in our school gardens! Here is some of our writing we did about the trip.

Look at some of the amazing things we did!

Inquiry

We have been investigating what our school gardens are like for our inquiry. We did an experiment to see what sort of insects lived in the garden. This is how we did it.

WALT…find insects in our garden.

Things you will need:

  • A small, clear, plastic cup
  • Shovels,
  • Honey

Dig a small hole in the dirt. The hole will need to be the same size as the plastic cup. Lower the plastic cup into the hole so that the brims are even with the earth. Put a small scoop of honey in the cup and cover it with a small layer of loose grass, leaves and dirt.

We found lots of ants and some millipedes in our cup when we checked it the next day. We looked at them with a special magnifying glass and thought about what wow words we could use to describe them.

We also had some amazing speeches about NZ birds, insects or animals. Well done to everyone! Here is Scarlett with her prop that she made for her talk about kiwis.

Learning in Week 4

We have been training hard over the last few weeks for cross country. We learned all about fair play and how it was about trying our best and not all about winning. We tried our hardest to challenge ourselves - here are some of the pictures taken on the day!

Maths

We have been learning about fractions for the last few weeks. We are getting really good at identifying fractions of a shape, and now are starting to work out fractions of a set. This means we are starting to work out how many is half of 10, or a quarter of 8. Here are some pictures that show some of the activities we have been doing all by ourselves!

Reading

We are still learning about inferring, or finding clues in the text. Listen to our beautiful reading!

Learning in Week 2

We have had a great week in Room 5 this week. We have started doing a lot of work on our inquiry topic, deciding if things are living or non-living.

Writing

We also wrote some descriptions about things we might find in the forest. Here are some of our Seesaw stories - come into class to read some others!

Seth's weta

Petra

We also made some Mother's day cards. We hope you enjoyed them!

Reading

We are still working on inferring when we read. We look for clues to find out something - this could be where the person is, how they are feeling, or even what they are doing. Here are some pictures we drew of where we thought the people could be:

Magnus said the person was at a zoo.

Jack thought the person could be diving off something.

Music

Mr Ramsey has been helping us with ostinato patterns - they are a rhythm that is repeated over and over. Here is us playing a piece we are practicing.

Writing

We have penpals at another school. They are year 3. We wrote them a postcard about our holidays, and decorated them. We tried our best to write an exciting hook in, an introduction, then say what we did first, next, and finally, and then say something about how we felt.

Sam tells us all about his Easter!

"To Danielle

Guess what I did in the holidays? I went to the bike park with my mum and dad. Onepoto bike park is fun and I got an icecream. It was the best day ever.

From Mia "

Reading

We're really excited to become detectives next week in Reading. We are working on inferring, which is finding clues about what the story is trying to tell us. We have made magnifying glasses to help find clues in the stories we are reading. You can even help at home by asking us how a character could be feeling and what clues we used to help us figure it out!

Inquiry

Our inquiry this term is Forest Communities. The central idea is about how plants, birds and insects live together and depend on each other as part of a community. We have already come up with what we would like to find out about this topic, and have started learning some more about it. Here is us practicing our observational drawings of trees in our school.
