This one with the patent date of 1866 obviously didn't work. It looks like the tab was intended to snap behind the edge of the button, holding it in place, but it appears to have pulled out anyway, bending the tab in the process. It's a neat looking piece, though. I can't get over how every little thing was so ornate back in those days.
The rest are an assortment indicative of the variety that can be found in this particular arena of collecting.
