Romania Nova was created in 2005. This commission´s objective is to create a forum of discussion for the comparative studies of syntax and morphology of the Romance languages spoken in America. The studies in Romania Nova use formal and quantitative methods alongside a unique comparative perspective. That is, we are interested in comparing and studying Romance varieties spoken in America, with emphasis on American Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Canadian French. Of course, the comparison also includes other Romance varieties in Europe and the rest of the world.

In this commission, syntax, morphology and semantics studies have been discussed, interface studies with sociolinguistics have also been discussed, always with the idea of discovering and advancing in the analysis of new phenomena that are relevant for the study of language in general, and of languages in contact in particular, taking as a point of departure the Romance languages that are spoken in the American space. Through this commission we have managed to create a greater cohesion in the formal studies on Spanish, Portuguese and French, which makes this commission a unique space for dialogue in Latin America.
