Specimen Orchards 1920s

The Roeding Family

George C. Roeding

George Roeding (owner of Fancher Creek Nursery in Fresno) bought the California Nursery Company in 1917 and with it he obtained John Rock's Mother Orchard. The orchard was scattered around the 463 acres and so it was a virtual orchard of a sort. The old orchard books identify which nursery block have which fruit varieties.

  • Roeding published the Roeding Fruit Grower's Guide in 1919.

  • Roeding published a booklet about John Rock's Test Orchards in this booklet in 1926: "Budwood, Scions and Cuttings (embracing Over 1000 Varieties): From Record Performance Fruit Trees : Covering a Period of Ten to Fifty Years in the Test Orchards Founded by John Rock on the Grounds of the California Nursery Company : and Also in Record Bearing Orchards and Vineyards Under the Personal Observation of George C. Roeding in Various Portions of California for More Than a Third of a Century"

  • Rock's Orchard disappeared over time. Originally it spread across the 463 acre nursery. Portions of the property were sold off after 1917.
